How are you getting on with your Christmas planning? I hope these challenges are helping to you create a Christmas LESS stressful and MORE enjoyable? I’d LOVE to know what you think…head on over here, drop me a line and let me know!
Okay, onto today’s challenge…are you ready? Let’s dive in!
Going away this holiday season?
When it comes to Christmas, there’s so much to plan, organise and do. If you’re staying with friends or relatives, figuring out what you need to pack and then actually remembering to pack it all can be a challenge in itself! Just what do you need to take and how do you remember to pack it all? It’s no easy task. Especially if you have to pack for yourself AND your kids…and if you’re anything like me, your husband too!
And so, I thought we’d focus on exactly that for today’s challenge! If you’re going away this Christmas, this challenge is for you. Today, I want you to:
Challenge #8: Start a packing list…
Make your life easier by starting a packing list…
Have a running list of all the things you need to do, organise and pack and add to it as you think of things. Then, when it comes to actually getting packed, you can just scroll down your packing list and tick everything off as you go.
I do this every time we go away and I cannot tell you how much easier it makes getting ready to go somewhere – especially at Christmas. It might seem like an unnecessary step but creating a packing list is totally worth it. We have enough to think about as it is and so if there’s something we can do to make things a little easier, I’m all for it!
Spend some time thinking about where you are going and how long you’re going to be away for. What will you be doing whilst you’re there? What do you need to take with you? Add it to your packing list. If it helps, use the notes app on your phone as a place to record what you need to take. Then, whenever you think of something, you can add it to your packing list right away.
As you get closer to Christmas, start making a pile of the things you want to take. Add items to the pile as you think of them, then tick them off your packing list. A few days before you go away, scroll through your packing list, see what you’ve already ticked off and gather anything you’ve not yet packed. Doing it this way – especially if you need to pack for everyone else – makes going away so much easier.
Want a little help getting started on your packing list?
Here are a few ideas of what you might want to include on your packing list:
- Clothes – for you and your kids.
- Shoes and boots.
- Essentials such as your hairdryer and mobile phone charger.
- Baby supplies.
- Medication for those who need it.
- Food – especially if you have special dietary requirements.
- Winter gear – including your snow boots if you need them!
- Gifts for those you’re staying with.
- Going to a different country? Don’t forget to pack your passport and currency!
Not going away?
And if you’re not going away but you have friends staying instead, simply switch today’s challenge on it’s head. Make a list of all the things you need to do to be ready for your guests instead. For instance:
- Do you have enough bedding?
- What will you be cooking?
- When do you need to buy the food?
- Do you need to declutter and freshen up the room they’ll be staying in?
- What will you be doing when you’re together?
- What do you need to arrange?
Want a little extra help to get guest-ready for Christmas?
Chrissy from Organise My House has some great tips to help you make sure you’re guest-ready in this post. My favourite tip is giving your guests different coloured towels to everyone else. For us, it makes it really easy to tell them apart – especially when my youngest never knows which towel is his!
Another great tip she shares is to try sleeping in the guest room for a night. This is such a good idea and a great way to iron out any issues before your guests arrive. Find out what the rest of Chrissy’s tips for being guest-ready at Christmas are here.
That’s it for today!
