The temptation to stay in bed…
Have you ever noticed that the days where you’re constantly hitting the snooze button and dragging yourself out of bed at the last minute never go as well as the days where you’re up and doing bright and early?
It’s super annoying isn’t it?!
If only we could get as much done on the days we sleep in as we do when we’re up at the crack of dawn!
Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. Because sleeping through our alarms doesn’t just affect our mornings, it affects our entire day.
It might be tempting to keep hitting that snooze button – especially when it’s cold outside. But the reality is, when we get up with plenty of time to spare, we always have a much better day.
Because how we start our day or more specifically, how we spend those first few hours, greatly impacts how the rest of our day goes. It sets the tone for the entire day.
Start your day off rushed and stressed and that’s how it’ll continue to be. But start it off organised, calm and collected and that’s how things will stay.
But how do you make sure you start your day off on the right side of the bed?
How do you resist the urge to keep hitting that snooze button and jump out of bed bright and breezy?
By having a morning routine!
Establishing a morning routine…
As a recovering night owl, I’m not gonna lie. Getting up early isn’t something that comes naturally to me. It’s something I’ve had to work REALLY hard at over the years. And some days I still struggle. Which is super frustrating because I LOVE that first hour or so when it’s still dark and quiet and everyone else is still in bed.
There’s nothing quite like making that first cup of coffee and getting to drink it in peace (and hot!) whilst reading a chapter of my current book or journaling in my notebook.
Not only do those precious few minutes give me some much-needed time to myself, but they allow me to gather my thoughts and plan out my day BEFORE the chaos descends too.
When I start my day bright and early, I feel SO much calmer. I find it easier to deal with whatever life throws at me and I’m much more positive too.
And it can be the same for you too!
You just need a morning routine. And to fill that routine with habits that are going to make your day – and life – LESS stressful and MORE enjoyable.
Not sure what habits to include?
Keep reading because I’m about to share all of my favourite morning routine ideas that are guaranteed to not only get your day off to a great start but make sure it stays that way too!
Coming up with morning routine ideas…
Over the years, I’ve learned that the need to keep hitting the snooze button is less about not being a morning person and more about feeling overwhelmed about the day ahead.
When you don’t know what you need to do or you feel overwhelmed by all the things that need to be done, it’s easier to just stay in bed and hide.
But what if you had a plan?
What if you knew exactly what you were doing and had a list of things you did each morning to help you start your day off on the right foot? What if you had a routine that made sure you were organised, all fired up and good to go?
That’s where the morning routine comes in!
Think of your morning routine as your ‘you’ time. The time where you do things that are just for you and tasks or activities that are going to make your day run more smoothly.
What morning routine ideas can you add to your day to set you up for success?
Making your morning routine work for you…
Ask yourself what morning routine ideas you could include that would make a real impact on your life. What habits could you cultivate that would make your day less stressful and more enjoyable?
Work backwards from the time you need to leave the house or start work. Make a list of all the obvious things you need to do (shower, get dressed, eat breakfast etc.) and how long they take you to do. Then, using the list below, make a list of all the morning routine ideas that you would like to do to.
Pick the ones you feel would have the biggest impact on your day and build them into your routine.
Don’t forget about activities that are for you too.
That first hour or so when everyone else is in bed is THE perfect time to work on your personal growth, self development and self care.
I often use part of my morning routine to read a personal development book, listen to a podcast or work through a module of whatever course I’m taking.
What areas of your life do you want to work on most?
Using the list of morning routine ideas below for inspiration, think about what you want to work on, what you want to improve and how you can make it part of your morning routine.
Write down your routine…
Once you’ve decided which morning routine ideas you are going to use, write them down. Add them to your journal or your planner and look at them every single morning. If you think it’ll help, you could even write it out like a proper routine!
Mine looks something like this:
- 05.50 am – Get up, make a cup of coffee and drink a glass of water.
- 06.00 am – Read a chapter of whatever book I’m currently reading.
- 06.15 am – Write in my journal, fill in my gratitude journal.
- 06.30 am – Write out my top 3 priorities for the day.
- 06.40 am – Put on a load of washing and make Harrison’s packed lunch.
- 06.50 am – Work on the course I’m currently taking.
- 07.30 am – Shower, get dressed, eat breakfast, get Harrison ready for school, take dinner out of the freezer.
- 08.00 am – Carry on with my course.
- 08.30 am – Do the school run.
- 09.00 am – Start work.
35 morning routine ideas for a better day…
So, are you ready to get cracking and start creating a morning routine that sets you up for success every single day?
Here are 35 morning routine ideas to get your day off to a great start. Adopt a few of these rituals and take back your mornings!
Morning routine ideas: #1 – 10
Journaling is probably my most favourite morning ritual of all. I absolutely love the ten minutes each day that I spend with my notebook and pen. Offloading your thoughts onto paper is incredibly therapeutic!
Not only does journaling help you to get to know yourself better but it’s good for your personal growth, mental health and overall wellbeing too. It helps you to become more in touch with your emotions, manage stress better and be more intentional about the way you live your life.

#2. POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS
I’d read a lot about the power of positive affirmations but it wasn’t until I started repeating them daily that I discovered just how powerful they could be.
Positive affirmations have helped me to embrace self-love. They’ve helped increase my sense of self-worth and boost my confidence levels. And they can totally do the same for you too.
Find a few affirmations that resonate, write them in your journal or planner and say them out loud to yourself every morning and evening.
New to using affirmations and not sure which ones to say? Here are some of my favourite:
- Positive affirmations for health and wellness.
- Affirmations for self-love.
- Powerful positive affirmations for when you’re having a tough time.
#3. PRACTICE GRATITUDE
Make practicing gratitude one of your morning rituals and you’ll discover just how much you have to be thankful for. Take the time to write down writing down three things you’re thankful for each morning and you’ll realise that it’s not what but WHO we have around us that really matters.
Practice gratitude each morning and you’ll discover that not only will you be more content with what you already have, but you’ll want for less too.
Need a little help with getting started? These posts will help:
- The benefits of practicing gratitude – and how to do it.
- Five ways to bring more gratitude to your day.

#4. VISUALISE YOUR PERFECT DAY
Sit quietly, close your eyes and spend a few minutes visualising your perfect day as if it’s happened already. What went well? What did you accomplish? How do you feel?
Visualise those successes. Feel those successes. Then, when you go about your day, you’ll find everything is so much easier and you’re far more focused because your brain thinks you’ve done it already!
A simple but incredibly powerful mindset trick, whenever I do it, I ALWAYS have a better day
You might think that you have to be a highly spiritual person in order to meditate. But that’s simply not the case. People use meditation for religious purposes and cultural reasons. And there are as many forms of meditation as there are practices.
Whether you’re a spiritual person or not, there are a great many benefits to adding meditation to your morning routine. Meditation can help to decrease anxiety, it helps you to become more empathic, it can increase your focus and improve your memory and it can help you to become more creative too.
Adopt meditation as one of your morning rituals and in as little as ten minutes a day, you could be on your way to a brand-new you.
Need a little help in getting started?
Check out the Calm app, you’ll find plenty of meditation sessions on there to get you started. It’s my most favourite meditation app by far!
Making exercise part of your morning routine is a great way to get you moving and the blood pumping around your body. A quick workout before you start your day can help improve your mood and increase your focus and productivity. It might even help you on your weight loss journey too!
Whatever exercise you choose – and how energetic you are – is entirely up to you. You could go for a walk (see ritual #33), ride your bike, go to the gym, go for a swim, do a workout video on YouTube in your front lounge (I like using my stepper or doing a quick Zumba workout) or just do a few jumping jacks!
How will you make exercise become a morning ritual for you?
Before I had my youngest I used to go to a yoga class once a week and absolutely loved it. It’s something that I really miss and want to do again, so it’s definitely something that’s top of my list to add to my morning routine next time I shake things up.
You can find plenty of beginner yoga tutorials on YouTube to get you started if you’re new to yoga, but this one probably has to be my favourite – and you can do it in just ten minutes. Get ready to stretch those limbs and feel energised, refreshed and ready for your day!
#8. DEEP BREATHING EXERCISES
Deep breathing helps to relax the mind and body. And when practiced daily, it can help to reduce stress, anxiety and blood pressure.
Add a few minutes of controlled breathing to your morning ritual each day and not only will you feel calmer, but you’ll find it easier to tackle whatever the day throws your way. Especially if you combine it with a few minutes of meditation and journaling too.
Not sure where to start?
Find six different deep breathing exercises to try in THIS post. My favourite is the progressive muscle relaxation exercise. It’s a great way of getting rid of tension in the body!
#9. MIRACLE MORNING S.A.V.E.R.S.
Okay, so this is actually several morning rituals in one but it’s great for helping you give your morning routine some structure.
From The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod, S.A.V.E.R.S. takes six different morning rituals and combines them to create a morning routine that’s incredibly easy to follow – especially if you’re just starting out on the morning routine front.
The idea is that you spend a few minutes on each and have a great morning routine nailed – and some much-need time for you – in as little as 30 minutes. Which is totally doable, right?
S.A.V.E.R.S stands for:
- S – Silence: Spend the first few minutes of your day in silence with meditation, deep breathing exercises or simply sitting quietly for a few minutes.
- A – Affirmations: Say a few positive affirmations out loud to get you into the right mindset for your day ahead.
- V – Visualisation: Like ritual #4, spend some time visualising your perfect day and what it feels like to accomplish everything on your list.
- E – Exercise: Get your body moving, the blood pumping and the oxygen flowing to your brain with a few minutes of exercise – see ritual #6.
- R – Reading: Work your way through that never-ending reading list or focus on your personal growth by diving into a self-improvement book each morning.
- S – Scribing: Grab your journal and pen, spend some time answering some self reflection questions and get to know yourself better.
Want to find out more about the S.A.V.E.R.S?
I highly recommend listening to Hal Elrod’s The Miracle Morning on Audible.
Not been gifted an audiobook before? Let me know HERE and I’ll gift you a copy of The Miracle Morning for free!
#10. LISTEN TO MUSIC
According to Get Healthy Stay Healthy, there are several benefits to listening to music including improved mood, reduced levels of stress, better memory and less anxiety.
When we listen to music, our brain releases the feel-good chemical dopamine and that makes us feel happier. And so, what better a way to brighten up your day than adding listening to music to your morning routine?!
Create your very own morning routine playlist and add all the feel-good songs you can think of to it. Then, pour that cup of coffee, curl up in your favourite chair, put on your headphones, close your eyes and listen to your favourite tunes for a few minutes.
What songs will you add?
Let me know in the comments below so that I can check them out too!
Morning routine ideas: #11 – 20
#11. READ A BOOK
I don’t know about you but my reading list is HUGE! I have so many books I want to read and so adding reading to my morning routine makes total sense.
Make reading part of your morning routine too and you’ll be amazed how quickly you start ticking off those books from your never-ending list. Just ten minutes a day makes such a difference.
Be careful though, because if you’re anything like me, once you start reading, you’ll want to keep going!
Just one more page…just one more page…just one more page…
Colouring is one of my absolute favourite ways to unwind and relax. An incredibly therapeutic exercise, it can help to reduce stress and anxiety as well as improving your motor skills. Plus, it’s a great excuse to buy lots of nice fineliners and crayons, right?!
My youngest has Johanna’s Lost Ocean colouring book, so sometimes we’ll sit and colour together after school too. It makes for some great mother and son time – especially if there’s hot chocolate and snacks involved too!
#13. LISTEN TO AN AUDIOBOOK
Not got time to read? Listening to audiobooks is a great way to catch up on your reading whilst on the go.
Perfect for a long commute or drive to work, audiobooks can make a time that would otherwise be boring pass incredibly quickly. Plus, listen to your audiobook on 2x speed and you can get through your list twice as fast too!
Listening to an audiobook is a morning ritual that’s easily combined with another too. One of my favourite morning rituals to tag it onto is going for a walk (ritual #33). Not only do I get exercise and get to be outdoors soaking up the morning sun, but I get to tick off the books on my never-ending reading list as well. And, if it’s a self improvement book, I get to work on my personal growth too!
My favourite audiobook provider? Audible of course!
Right now, I’m listening to Good Vibes, Good Life by Vex King. Other great audiobooks to check out are:
- The Life Plan by Shannah Kennedy
- Everything is Figureoutable by Marie Forleo
- The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F**K by Sarah Knight
#14. LISTEN TO A PODCAST
Just like audiobooks can help you focus on your personal growth, so too can listening to podcasts. And if you’re an entrepreneur and have your own business, they’re packed full of tips on how to rock being a CEO too.
New to podcasts or feel like you never have time to keep up with your favourite show? Add listening podcasts to your morning routine and listen to an episode each day.
My favourites are…
For personal growth…
- Design Your Dream Life by Natalie Bacon
- Do It Scared by Ruth Soukup
- The Purpose show by Allie Casazza
And for business:
- Inbox Besties by Kate Doster
- Online Marketing Made Easy by Amy Porterfield
- Simple Pin Podcast by Kate Ahl
#15. DRINK WATER
Did you know that we only need to lose around 2% of the water in our body to start to feel the effects of dehydration? And when those water levels start to drop, it becomes harder to stay focused and think straight. Headaches kick in and we can feel sluggish.
I used to be really bad at drinking enough water but dring my chemotherapy for breast cancer, I had to drink 2-3 litres of water a day to flush the toxins from my body and it’s a habit that’s stayed with me ever since.
Start your day off on the right foot by drinking a glass of water before you do anything else. Then, aim to drink 6-8 glasses of fluid a day.
Want to know my secret to make sure it happens?
I carry a water bottle around with me! It makes it super easy – when I’ve refilled it for the third time, I know I’ve hit my quota for the day!
#16. ENJOY A MINDFUL CUP OF TEA
Always drinking your tea or coffee on the go? End up reheating it 3 times before you drink it? Add drinking a mindful cup of tea to your list of morning routine ideas and you’ll get to enjoy that first cuppa from start to finish. Take the time to breathe in its smell. Sip it slowly. Savour every taste.
My go-to cup in the morning?
Sometimes it’s THIS hazelnut flavoured coffee, but most days I prefer tea. Especially if it’s English Rose black tea or my absolute favourite, THIS Shanghai Chai green tea. Either way, as long as it’s from Whittard’s, I’m happy!
#17. EAT A HEALTHY BREAKFAST
Just like the saying “eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper” says, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Just like stoking a fire, you need to fuel your body with all the nutrients it needs so that you have the energy to go about your day.
Treat yourself to a healthy, balanced breakfast that’s energy-boosting and packed full of protein. My personal favourite? Scrambled eggs with smashed avocado on toast! Yum!
#18. USE ESSENTIAL OILS IN THE SHOWER
We might not have the time to have a relaxing bath every morning but thanks to essential oils, we can still have a spa-like experience in the shower.
There are lots of ways to do it, but my favourite is to wet the shower walls, spritz the oil onto the wall, turn oun the shower nice and hot so the steam builds up, then get in and enjoy. Be sure to turn the heat down first though!
My go-to oils for this are:
- For boosting energy levels, try Spearmint, Eucalyptus or Rosemary essential oil.
- To improve your mood, go for Orange oil, Lime oil or Lemon oil.
- And for a more calming effect, try Patchouli or Lavender essential oil.
#19. HAVE A SOCIAL MEDIA DETOX
Have you ever noticed how that five minutes scrolling on Facebook turns very quickly into half an hour? And before you know it, all that extra time you thought you had has gone.
Avoid the social media trap by not picking up your phone as soon as you get up.
Add a social media detox to your morning routine and you won’t get distracted by everything else that’s going on.
Try to resist the urge to check your emails and messages too. There’s nothing that can’t wait a couple more hours, so save yourself from worrying about the need to respond until you get into work or the kids are at school.
#20. CHECK YOUR CALENDAR
I don’t know about you but I’m unable to remember anything unless it’s written down. So for me, having checking my calendar as part of my morning routine is a must.
Open up your diary and look at what you have going on. What appointments or calls do you have? Do the kids have any after school activities? What do you need to allow time for? What do you have going on tomorrow that you need to plan for today?
It’ll only take you a few minutes to do, but you’ll feel so much more organised knowing what’s going on!
Morning routine ideas: #21 – 30
#21. WRITE DOWN YOUR TOP 3 TASKS
Having a long list of things to do can be pretty overwhelming. And when there’s too much on your list it can be tempting to ignore it and go do something else.
I like having one master task list with everything on it that I need to do but then each morning scroll through that list and pick out the most important 3 tasks that have to be done. I write those down separately either in my notebook or on my Daily Board in Trello and make sure I do those before I do anything else.
And if I do manage to complete anything else, that’s a bonus!
#22. MAKE A LIST
There’s always a list to be made, right?! What list can you spend a few minutes creating that will make your life easier or help you to get organised?
Are there any jobs you need to do around the house? Errands you need to run? Gifts you need to buy? Phone calls you need to make? Or create a list of things just for fun. Think movies you want to watch, restaurants you want to try, books you want to read etc. etc.
Oh, and while you’re there, don’t forget to hit that follow button too!
#23. TAKE 30 MINUTES FOR PERSONAL GROWTH
Finding time during a busy day to focus on your personal growth can be tough. Which is why I love including half an hour of personal development time to my morning routine.
It’s amazing just how much you can get done in those 30 minutes when everyone else in still in bed. And, it’s great to know that when you head off out for your day, that you’ve already done something that’s just for you.
Not sure what personal growth activities to try?
Check out THIS post full of ideas for self improvement to get you started. Whether you want to focus on mindset, increase your self-esteem, feel more confident, take a course, or improve your health, diet or relationships, it’s got you covered!
#24. PLAN OUT A GOAL
Goals are a lot easier to accomplish when you know what steps you need to take. So, add planning out a goal to your list of morning routine ideas to go from goal setter to goal-crushing pro.
Set aside a few minutes a couple of mornings a week to check-in on your goals, review your progress and figure out what steps you need to take next.
Better still, snag yourself to a copy of my CRUSH Your Goals Planner and discover how to go from goal setter to goal-getter and CRUSH your goals like a pro – every single time!
#25. CHECK-IN ON YOUR FINANCES
Do you know where your money goes each month?
For instance, what’s your weekly grocery bill? How much do you spend on fuel and travel expenses? How much do meals out and takeaways cost you? And how much these past twelve months have you spent on unnecessary purchases?
If your answer is “no idea” or “I’d rather not know”, it’s time to find out!
Add checking in on your finances to your list of morning routine ideas and start telling your money what to do and where to go. Be brave and pull out those bank statements. Check-in on that banking app and make sure there’s nothing out of the ordinary on there too.

#26. TRACK YOUR SPENDING
There’s nothing worse than getting to the end of the month and wondering where on earth all of your money has gone. Just what did you spend it on?! And how did it go so fast?!
Avoid that trap by making tracking your expenses part of your morning routine. Dig out any receipts from the previous day and make a note of how much you spent and on what.
I use THIS Budget Book from Paperchase. It makes it super easy to see exactly what I’m spending my money on and where I need to cut back. And, as a sucker for pretty stationery, I just love the blue flowers on the front cover too!

#27. COMPLETE A 5-MINUTE TASK
If your to-do list is anything like mine, I bet you have a few items on there that can be done in five minutes or less?
And that although you know they could probably be done in the time it takes to boil the kettle, you frequently leave them for another day?
How do I know that?
Because I do it too!
But do you know what? When those five-minute jobs are done, life feels a lot less stressful!
Instead of feeling weighed down by a ton of annoying little jobs we keep meaning to do, we’re free to focus on other more important tasks that need our attention.
If you don’t yet have a list of 5-minute tasks, I highly recommend starting one! Then, add it to your list of morning routine ideas, scroll through the list, pick something and get it done!
#28. DO THE LAUNDRY
There’s always plenty of laundry to do, right?! So why not get your day off to a great start and tick one thing off your to-do list right away but putting on a load of washing as soon as you get up.
Get organsied the night before by putting the load into your machine so that it’s ready to go right away. Then, when you put the kettle, switch on your washing machine too.
Worried that the noise will wake your kids? Put it on when they come down for breakfast! Either way, you’ll have a load finished before you get back from the school run. It’s a win-win!
#29. TAKE DINNER OUT THE FREEZER
There’s nothing worse than getting to 5pm and realising you’ve not got anything planned for dinner.
Save yourself from the “what’s for dinner, Mum?” stress by adding taking dinner out the freezer to your list of morning routine ideas. Then, whether it’s fresh meat or leftovers, come dinnertime, you’re good to go!
Make life even easier by planning your meals in advance and shopping from your freezer. That way, all you need to do is look at your meal plan and take out whatever you need. It stops things going to waste too as you’re making sure you’re using up what’s in the freezer first instead of heading to the grocery store every day.

#30. PUT DINNER IN THE SLOW COOKER
One of my favourite things about the winter months is using my slow cooker to knock up a tasty, heartwarming stew. Especially if it’s cold outside and I’ve spent a long day at work. There’s nothing quite like opening the front door to the smell of dinner cooking away, knowing all you need to do is make some mash or pasta and dinner is served.
Am I right?!
But slow cookers aren’t just reserved for winter. They can be used all year round!
Take advantage of that and make your life easier by making using your slow cooker part of your morning routine. Whilst making your kids their breakfast and packed lunch add some meat and a few veg to your slow cooker at the same time!
Need a little inspiration?
Morning routine ideas: #31 – 35
#31. PLAN YOUR MEALS
I’ve already mentioned the benefits of shopping from your freezer and adding using your slow cooker to your list of morning routine ideas. But take things one step further by using a few minutes of your morning routine to plan out your meals for the week.
A great morning ritual to add to your Sunday or Monday morning, it gives you a chance to think about what you’re going to cook each day. Which in turn takes away the stress of figuring out what to have for dinner come 5pm.
You could even create a list of go-to meals too. Then, when planning your meals, all you need to do is scroll through your list, check your pantry and add the meal to your meal plan. Dinner sorted!
#32. WRITE YOUR SHOPPING LIST
You’ve just planned out your meals for the week, so why not write out your shopping list too?! Look at your meal plan, see what ingredients you need and add them to the list. Then, whether you do your shopping when you’ve dropped your kids off at school or on your way home from work, you know exactly what you need to buy!
Want to take things one step further? Why not do your online shopping as part of your morning routine too?
Write your meal plan, make your list, log in to your online store and start adding everything you need to your basket. And, if you use a service like Amazon’s subscribe and save, why not order your monthly supplies of household sundries at the same time too?!
#33. GO FOR A WALK
There’s nothing quite like a bit of fresh air and exercise to blow away the cobwebs. And the best way to do it is by adding a walk to your morning routine. Not only does taking a wander keep you fit and healthy, but it’s also free!
There are many other benefits to a nice morning walk too. It gets the blood pumping, leaving you feeling refreshed and invigorated. It gives you a break from the daily grind. You get to pound your stresses out on the streets. And it’s a great time to catch up on your reading by listening to audiobooks or podcasts too (see rituals #13 and #14)!
#34. HUG YOUR KIDS
This is near the bottom of the list because hopefully, you will have been able to have done a few of these morning routine ideas before your kids descend on you!
Not that we need an excuse to hug our kids and we all how good a hug can make us feel, but studies show that there are a great many benefits to be had by hugging your children, including:
- Helping you to strengthen your bond.
- Increasing your happiness levels, and
- Help stop temper tantrums.
Read THIS post by Parenting for Brain to find out more.
#35. SEND A GOOD MORNING TEXT
This is a nice one to end with because you’ve done all you can to start your day off right and feel great, so why not send some joy someone else’s way?!
Reach out to a friend and drop them a quick good morning message to make them smile. You could send them a positive affirmation, your favourite quote or just a simple ‘have a great day‘.
You could even write a fun message on a post-it note and stick it in your kid’s and/or spouse’s lunchbox too!

About the Author
Hey there! In case we haven’t met, I’m Sarah. A wife, mum, fur mama, certified master life coach and goal success coach, founder of a Simple and Contented Life and your mentor for making a change for the better.
Incredibly passionate about helping mums declutter and simplify their lives so that they feel more organised and have more time for their families AND themselves, I‘m here to help you become the person you want to be and create the life YOU want live.
A cross between Hermione Granger and Monica Geller, I’m also an introvert and a HUGE bookworm. I love cocktails, hazelnut lattes, true crime and all things pretty stationery, especially notebooks and planners!
When I’m not helping my coaching clients and Club members create a life they LOVE, you’ll find me in my office designing new printables for this Store, hanging out with my youngest in Starbucks or attempting to walk my somewhat lazy Frenchie pup, Arthur!
I’m absolutely thrilled you’re here…I know that you have the power to become your BEST self and live your BEST life, and together, we can make it happen! 💛
